Common Questions

Everything you need to know about chimney care

How often should I have my chimney swept and inspected?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) recommends that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents be inspected at least once per year and cleaned as needed. For homeowners who use their fireplace regularly especially those burning wood an annual sweep before each heating season is the gold standard. However, if you notice smoke backing up into the room, detect a strong odor from the fireplace, or see visible debris or animal nests, don't wait call us immediately regardless of when you last had service. Heavy users who burn more than three cords of wood per season may benefit from semi-annual cleanings to keep creosote at safe levels.
What is creosote and why is it dangerous?
Creosote is a highly combustible byproduct of burning wood. It forms when smoke, gases, and moisture from burning wood condense inside your cooler chimney flue and stick to the liner walls. It exists in three stages: Stage 1 is a light, dusty soot (easy to remove), Stage 2 is harder, flaky deposits (more difficult), and Stage 3 is a thick, tar-like glazed buildup (extremely difficult and dangerous). Even a 1/8-inch layer of Stage 2 or 3 creosote is enough for the CSIA to recommend immediate cleaning before further use. Ignited creosote can burn at temperatures exceeding 2,000°F, causing a chimney fire that can spread to your home's structure. Annual sweeping keeps creosote at safe, manageable levels.
How much does a chimney sweep cost?
Our pricing is transparent and competitive. A standard Level I inspection with a basic sweep typically starts at a flat rate that covers the full service no hidden fees. Level II inspections with video camera scanning are priced slightly higher due to the advanced equipment and detailed written report provided. Repair costs vary based on the scope of work: minor tuckpointing starts at one price range, while larger masonry projects or liner installations are quoted individually after inspection. We always provide a free, no-obligation estimate before any work begins. We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards. Call (708) 726-4643 or book online for your personalized quote we never upsell services you don't need.
How long does a chimney sweep appointment take?
A standard chimney sweep and Level I inspection typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the size of your system and the degree of buildup. Level II inspections with video scanning add additional time usually 2 to 3 hours total as our technician carefully documents the entire flue system. If we discover significant repairs are needed, we'll walk you through our findings in detail and provide a written estimate before scheduling any follow-up work. We respect your time and always arrive within our scheduled service window. Same-day appointments are often available for urgent situations just give us a call.
Do I need to be home during the chimney sweep?
Yes, we do require an adult (18+) to be present for all chimney sweep and inspection appointments. This is important for several reasons: our technician will need access to both the fireplace interior and the roof, you'll need to sign our service agreement before work begins, and at the conclusion of service, our technician will walk you through their findings and answer any questions you have about the condition of your chimney. We want you to be fully informed and comfortable with everything we observed that transparency is a core part of how we operate. We offer flexible scheduling including early morning and Saturday appointments to accommodate your schedule.
What if there's an animal living in my chimney?
Animal intrusion is more common than most homeowners realize especially in the Chicago area where chimney swifts, raccoons, squirrels, and starlings frequently nest in unprotected flues. Our technicians are trained to safely identify and remove (or exclude) animals from your chimney system. It's important to note that chimney swifts are a federally protected migratory species we will not disturb an active swift nest during nesting season (May-October), but we can advise you on what to do. After removal, we strongly recommend installing a stainless steel chimney cap to prevent future intrusions. This is one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make to your chimney system.

Our waterproofing applications carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty and are compatible with all masonry chimney types.
